The “five-second rule” – a folkloric guideline on the time it is considered safe to eat food dropped on the floor – has been debunked by a new study.

“The popular notion of this theory is that if food is picked up quickly, it’s safe to eat because bacteria need time to transfer,” says Professor Donald Schaffner of Rutgers University, US, who studied the level of contamination in dropped food.

Hackers are targeting you … so keep moving

In July 2015, two white-hat hackers called Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, based in St. Louis, Mo., demonstrated a previously unknown (“zero-day” in the industry jargon) exploit which could take control of a car: they helpfully demonstrated to a journalist that they could control his air conditioning, the radio, even the accelerator pedal as he drove on the highway.

The designation “white hat” refers to the ethical intent of the hack: Miller and Valasek had no intention of using their exploit to put anyone in danger but, because they found it, the manufacturers were able to fix it. Since 1995, when the first bug bounty program was created, some hackers have been using their skills to make money on the right side of the law. (more…)

When Karen returned from vacation to her job at a U.S. health-care insurer, she was silently shown into her CEO’s office, to find other members of the management team already there.

The CEO silently pushed a non-disclosure agreement across the table. Two phrases grabbed her attention: “cyber attack” and “data breach.”

“How many of our customers are affected?” she asked.

“Potentially,” one of the managers said, “all of them”.

On signing the NDA, Karen became a member of an exclusive club of employees who even knew the breach existed. She was issued an “air-gapped” laptop, meaning that it had never been connected to another computer or network, with two instructions on how to use it: never connect it to the company network, and never use company email. Islamic State chief Baghdadi poisoned during feast, say reports

Islamic State chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and three of his top aides were seriously ill after being poisoned during a feast, media reports said on Monday.They have been shifted to an unknown location under strict measures, the reports said.

The lunch prepared for Baghdadi and three other IS leaders were allegedly poisoned in Nineveh’s Be’aaj district in Iraq, several Arabic-language and Iranian news sites reported.

Citing a source, Iraqi news agency WAA said the four are suffering from “severe poisoning” and “have been transferred to an unknown location under strict measures”. (more…)

For many of us the thought of even opening our eyes without a coffee hit is way too much effort but according to recent research that treasured early morning espresso to give your brain a boost is actually a bit of a myth and we shouldn’t really be drinking coffee between 8 and 9am.
