A five-storey structure collapsed at Behrampada in Bandra east of Mumbai at around 1 pm on Thursday. The fire brigade department was successful in rescuing one woman who was trapped inside. She was rushed to Bhabha hospital and is said to be stable.
While they suspect several more could be trapped inside, officials fear that the ones trapped could include six children. Fire brigade officials said they have sent five fire engines, one rescue van and one ambulance to the spot and search operations are on.
The entire area, which has a lot of slums around, was cordoned off by the police so that the search and rescue operation is not hampered.
Officials said the narrow lanes were hampering their search and rescue efforts.
“My six grandchildren and their mother is trapped inside the debris. They were residing on the first floor. I have no information about them yet,” said the Abdul Rab, a resident of the building.
The fire department got a call around 1.21 pm and senior officials rushed to the spot to supervise operations. Officials said the entire structure was made of brick and mortar and the collapse occurred because of the weak basement.
