Free voice calls, low data usage charges, lucrative schemes for students – Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries had something for everyone at the launch announcement of its much awaited Reliance Jio. In a big-bang launch for Reliance Jio, Ambani at the 42nd RIL AGM said that all voice calls for Jio customers will be free. Announcing the launch tariffs, Ambani said, we have a plethora of plans. “We start from Rs 19 per day data plan for the occasional data user. Then there is a Rs 149 monthly plan for the light data user. The data plan for the heaviest user goes up to Rs 4,999 per month,” he said. Reliance Jio, even before its full scale launch, has sent jitters in the telecom industry, with incumbents like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular aggressively offering freebies and discounts to woo new customers and retain existing ones. “Jio is the only mobile network in the country that is only 4G LTE,” said Mukesh Ambani at the 42nd Reliance AGM. Reliance Jio 4G launch: Mukesh Ambani announced special tariff plans that will bring cheer for students. “Any student who has a valid ID car will get the benefit of 25% more data on Jio’s main tariff plans,” Ambani said. “Data should never be unaffordable for anyone. Speaking at the 42nd AGM of Reliance Industries, Ambani announced that the Reliance Jio would be launched on September 5 and would be commercially made available on December 31, 2016. Stocks of Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communication came under pressure after Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani elaborated on the features of Reliance Jio related to free voice calls and cheaper data rates for its telecom venture Reliance Jio. The Reliance Jio announcements are distinctly disruptive and a “bold move” towards digitising millions in the rural parts of the country, setting a tough benchmark for its competitors as data becomes the new oil, experts said on Thursday.
